Dr. Courtney established the practice in 1974 after completing his residency
and serving as an Instructor at the University of Maryland Medical School.
He then performed the first total joint replacement (1975) and the first
arthroscopic surgery (1977) in Anne Arundel County.
He has special interest and advanced training in arthroscopic surgery and
joint replacement. His advanced training includes minimally invasive
surgery as well as the use of specialty implants such as Oxinium, ceramics,
and trabecular metal.
Currently, Dr. Courtney leads a team of surgeons as the Medical Director
of The Joint Replacement Center at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. He
has also served as Baltimore Washington Medical Center's Medical Staff President and for 25 years
as Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Courtney is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery
and the Arthroscopy Board of North America. He is a Fellow of both the
American College of Surgery and the American Academy of Orthopaedic
Surgery. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of
Maryland.
