History
Dr. Leo Courtney established Chesapeake Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center in 1974 to diagnose and treat individuals with musculoskeletal disorders. In 1974, healthcare services were not as accessible as they are today. Many people in need of orthopaedic care had to drive to Baltimore City or Washington, D.C. to receive treatment. Dr. Courtney chose to found his practice in Anne Arundel County so that area residents would have easy access to comprehensive orthopaedic and sports medicine care for children and adults of all ages. At that time, Baltimore Washington Medical Center (formerly North Arundel Hospital) was one of the first community hospitals to require all of its physicians to be board certified in their individual specialties, therefore, Dr. Courtney begin his association with the hospital because they had the same commitment to quality healthcare as he. In 1975 Dr. Courtney performed the first joint replacement surgery in Anne Arundel county at the hospital.

Over the years Chesapeake Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center has grown to include other doctors that excel in their area of orthopaedics. All of the physicians in the practice are extended privileges at Baltimore Washington Medical Center and many lead the teams of doctors in the surgical and treatment centers.

Location
Chesapeake Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center is located in the Empire Medical Building at intersection of Oakwood Drive and Hospital Drive in Glen Burnie, Maryland, across the street from Baltimore Washington Medical Center.
